To make your own jewelry cleaner, cover a bowl with aluminum foil, and pour in 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of dish detergent. Pour 1 cup of hot water over the ingredients. Let the jewelry soak in the homemade cleaner for 10 minutes to loosen dirt and grime.
Use a toothbrush to gently scrub the jewelry. The bristles get into the nooks and crannies of the jewelry. Rinse the jewelry in clean water to remove the homemade jewelry cleaner. Inspect the jewelry to see if you need to scrub more. Rinse again, and dry the jewelry when you are happy with the results.
Alka-Seltzer or denture tablets make diamond jewelry sparkle again. Dissolve the tablet in a glass of water, and let the jewelry soak for a few minutes before rinsing. A soak in club soda overnight has a similar effect on diamonds and gemstones.
Vinegar combined with baking soda works well on silver jewelry. Combine 1/2 cup of vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda for a silver jewelry soak. Leave the jewelry in the homemade cleaner for two to three hours. For tarnished silver jewelry, make a paste of 1/4 cup of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of water. Rub the paste onto the jewelry with a damp sponge, and rinse it thoroughly after cleaning.
