Dress codes can instill unity within a group, yet they can also discourage creativity and individuality. Dress codes are used in a variety of different places, such as schools, workplaces and clubs.
The primary purpose for dress codes is to help everyone in a group identify with each other. The reasoning is that if everyone has the same physical appearance, it will promote a group culture where everyone can feel wanted. This is true for dress codes in the workplace as well as schools. Dress codes that are relatively loose receive the best feedback from students or employees because they allows them to express some individuality. Discipline and respect are just two of the traits that are expected as a result of dress codes.
Despite the positive aspects of dress codes, many people don't like them because individual identity is lost. These people would argue that real unity and conformity is created through a relaxed atmosphere and open communication. While they may be intended to bring out the best in people, dress codes have very little to do with mutual respect and harmony within a group of people. This can only be brought out through camaraderie and a willingness to contribute toward the group.
