Performing lower-body exercises that work the muscles from all angles helps prevent and reduce cellulite, explains Prevention. Body creams that contain retinol can also lessen the appearance of cellulite, as can losing weight for overweight women, notes WebMD.
One leg exercise that helps prevent cellulite involves squatting and then performing a side leg lift, explains Prevention. To perform this exercise, first bend the knees while lowering the backside, as if aiming to sit in an imaginary chair, until the thighs are parallel with the floor. Then, while keeping the back straight, raise a leg sideways, hold the position for about four seconds, and then alternate legs for 10 to 15 repetitions.
Some evidence suggests that retinol-containing skin creams help thicken the skin, making cellulite less visible, notes WebMD. The ingredient might achieve this effect by increasing the collagen content of the skin.
Cellulite is much more common in women than it is in men because the fibers of connective muscle tissue that compartmentalize fat cells are shaped differently in the sexes, notes Prevention. In women, the fibers form a honeycomb pattern, allowing fat to bulge outward and create a bumpy appearance when pressed against the skin. Meanwhile, the criss-cross pattern of men's connective muscle fibers helps keep fat contained.
