Some popular hair products in Kenya include Black Silk, SoftSheen-Carson and Venus. The top three hair care manufacturers and distributors in Kenya are L’Oréal East African, PZ Cussons East African and HACO Tiger Brands.
L’Oréal specializes in a wide range of hair care products distributed through African Queen in Uganda. Products such as SoftSheen-Carson, Dark and Lovely, and Blue Ice are popular top-sellers. L’Oréal has operated in South Africa since 1963 and began selling hair care products in Nairobi in 2011.
PZ Cussons is a major manufacturer of health care products, which includes the Venus and Joy range of hair products, shampoos, conditioners and gels. Tiger Brands is a manufacturer of BP Pure, used on hair for shine, protection and restoration. They are also the makers of Black Silk sold in East Africa, a hair product infused with essential oils specifically designed to keep Afro-ethnic hair moisturized.
The growing hair trend in Kenya, as of 2014, is straight, dark hair as opposed to naturally curly hair, which some perceive as less attractive and more difficult to manage. Many leading hair manufacturers feature black women with long, straight hair in advertising campaigns and on packaging, billboards and television. Some manufacturers' major product lines consist of straightening and relaxing products, such as Softsheen-Carson for African women by L’Oréal.
