Hello Kitty is a fictional character depicted as an anthropomorphic white cat with a red bow in her hair. A popular figure worldwide, Hello Kitty is representative of kawaii, the quality of cuteness in Japanese popular culture. Her likeness appears on a broad range of merchandise for both children and adults, from clothing and fashion accessories to school supplies and home appliances.
Hello Kitty, whose full name is Kitty White, was created by Yuko Shimizu in 1974 and first appeared on a coin purse in 1975. According to anthropologist Christine Yano, the Japanese company Sanrio developed Hello Kitty in an attempt to capitalize on the burgeoning "girl culture" of 1970s Japan. Hello Kitty products were initially marketed to preteen girls, but later garnered a much broader following in Japan and abroad.
Sanrio made the important move of establishing a licensing department in 1999, which allowed them to disseminate the Hello Kitty image to much wider audiences, increasing her visibility and boosting sales. According to a 2014 report from Racked, Hello Kitty garners more than $8 billion in global sales annually.Learn more about Skirts & Dresses
