To make a fishtail braid, start with a low ponytail, divide it into two equal sections and braid the hair using small pieces from the outer edge of each section. A beginner may find it easier to practice on another person first.
A fishtail braid is a twist on a traditional braid. When finished, it looks like a complex style, but in reality is easy to master.
Step 1: Make a ponytail
Use a hair elastic to make a low ponytail. Divide the ponytail into two equal sections.
Step 2: Begin to braid
Take a small section of hair, about a quarter of an inch wide, from the outside of the section of hair on the right side. Bring that piece over the right section, adding it to the left section. Repeat this step with the left side, adding a piece from the outer edge of the left section to the right. Continue in this manner down the entire length of the hair. Secure at the bottom with an elastic hair band.
Step 3: Finish the look
Use a pair of sharp scissors to cut the elastic at the top of the hair. Remove the elastic and gently tug on the hair down the length of the braid to loosen it slightly.
