As of 2015, the average price of tanzanite with good coloring is between $550 and $700 per carat. Intensely colored tanzanite of very high quality costs about $1,000 per carat.
Tanzanite is valued for its deep blue color and is often compared to sapphires. Its color can range from pure blue to a purple-blue color. Color is a determining factor in tanzanite's value. More intensely pigmented stones are more valuable and costly than stones with less pigmentation.
Clarity is also a deciding factor in tanzanite's worth. Gemstones that are cloudy or contain visible flaws are less expensive. High-quality tanzanite does not have visible cracks or particles inside the gem.
