To create ombre nails, you will use two colors of polish blended with a sponge and a topcoat. Paint each nail with a solid coat, then dab on a blend of both polishes using a sponge.
- Gather your supplies
To do ombre nails, you need nail polish remover, two colors of polish, a topcoat, a cosmetic sponge, a plastic sheet cover (such as a document cover), a small clean paintbrush and toothpicks. The nail polish colors can be in the same color family or completely different depending on your preference.
- Apply the first color
Cover the entire nail with the first color. Allow the coat to dry completely before proceeding.
- Mix your colors
Place generous amounts of both your colors right next to each other on the plastic cover. Use a toothpick to mix the colors together right where they meet in the middle. Customize the size of the mixed area to determine how it will look on your nail.
- Apply the ombre coat
Take your cosmetic sponge and dab it straight down onto the nail polish on the sheet. Make sure you are getting both colors and the midpoint. Dab it straight down a couple of times. Dab the covered sponge directly down on top of your nail. Dab it lightly several times on your nail, moving it slightly up and down. You can repeat this step, but allow the nail to dry in between.
- Apply a topcoat and clean up the nail
The sponging process can leave the nail surface bumpy. Apply two or three coats of topcoat, allowing each coat to dry in between. Use a clean paintbrush dipped in nail polish remover to clean the skin around the nail of excess polish.
