Coach bag serial numbers generally start with a stamped statement or creed attesting that the bag is genuine followed by “No” and the number, but there are no standardized rules for Coach serial numbers. The company constantly changed and deviated from rules. Many bags have no serial number at all.
Early bags were hand-stamped, and authentic bags often have improperly aligned numbers that run into the border of the creed. The company used randomly determined numbers that bore no relation to the style of the bag until 1994.
A serial number cannot verify the authenticity of a bag but can be useful in determining if it is counterfeit; however, Coach does not provide an authentication service. The only way to guarantee that a bag is genuine is to purchase it from a Coach store or from an authorized retailer listed on the company website.
