A military tattoo is a musical military performance, or a general display of armed forces. In the beginning, the tattoo was simply a musical performance, but today it can be a grand display of military personnel with theatrics and elaborate musical performances.
The military tattoo got its start in the 1600 during the Thirty Years' War. Each evening, garrison drummers went into the towns to alert soldiers that it was time to head back to the barracks. A military song called "Tattoo" also exists. It is played to signal to personnel in squad rooms that it is time to turn out the lights, discontinue all loud talking and quiet any disturbances within the next 15 minutes.
