Michael Kors is an American fashion designer and the head of Michael Kors Holdings Limited. His brand is based in New York City, and his primary export is sportswear for American women. His original name was Karl Anderson, Jr., before his mother remarried and his last name changed to Kors.
Michael Kors was born on August 9th, 1959 when his mother Joan Hamburger was 20 years old and working as a model. He was an only child who grew up on Long Island in New York City.
He was briefly educated at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, but soon dropped out and was taken in by Dawn Mello, who was the fashion director of the local Bergdorf Goodman boutique. Kors has since achieved prominence as a designer of women's fashion. Awards earned over his career include the 1999 CFDA Award for Womenswear Designer of the Year and the 2003 CFDA Award for Menswear Designer of the Year.
Kors worked as a creative director for Céline, a French women's leather goods franchise. After this, he departed to develop his own fashion brand. As of 2015, the Michael Kors fashion franchise has an estimated value of one billion dollars.
