Benzoyl peroxide, hydrocortisone and salicylic acid are three topical solutions that can eliminate red spots caused by shaving. Prescription antibiotics and topical steroids may be prescribed for severe cases.
The red spots that appear after shaving are typically known as razor bumps or razor burn. Ingrown hairs, shaving too close or using equipment that has not been cleaned properly can lead to razor bumps. While not shaving the area prevents the condition from starting, once hair in the affected area begins to grow in, it can be treated by cleansing and releasing the hair from the follicle. Irritated bumps can be soothed with over-the-counter remedies for acne such as glycolic and salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Natural remedies such as aloe vera gel may also help. For more serious irritations, a doctor may prescribe an antibiotic or other cream.
