To select the proper size for a suit jacket or sport coat, you need a chest measurement and a determination of short, regular or long based on your overall height. To select the proper size for suit pants, you need to know your waist and inseam measurements.
- Measure your chest
The chest measurement is taken at the widest part of the torso, which is just under the arms and across the chest. You need a measuring tape to take this measurement. Wrap the measuring tape all the way around your chest, and note the number where the tape meets the starting point. This number is your chest measurement. Make sure the tape remains parallel to the ground the entire way around your chest for an accurate measurement.
- Measure your height
Measure your height to determine whether you should select a jacket in a short, regular or long fit. Short jackets typically fit men under 5 feet 7 inches tall. Regular jackets typically fit men between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall. Men more than 6 feet tall usually need a long suit jacket.
- Measure your waist
Use a tape measure to find your waist measurement. Measure around the section of your waist where you want the pants to rest, and add a few fingers between the tape and your body to ensure the pants do not fit too tight.
- Measure your inseam
The inseam measurement is the length from the crotch to the ankle of a pair of pants. To find this measurement, measure from your crotch all the way to the bottom of your shoe in order to make sure your pants won't be too short or drag on the floor.
