To measure shoe width, trace the outline of each foot onto a piece of paper, then use a measuring tape to measure the width. This process takes only a few minutes for each foot and requires two pieces of blank paper, a pencil and a tailor's tape.
- Make an outline of each foot
Place one bare foot onto a sheet of blank paper. Hold your pencil, and press it against the inside of your foot. Draw the outline of the foot onto the paper as the pencil is pressed against your foot. Repeat the process for the other foot.
- Measure the width
Use the flexible tailor's tape to measure the widest part of each outline. Make a notation on the paper to help you remember the measurement. Use this measurement when you look at a shoe width chart.
- Determine the width from a table
Look at a foot- or shoe-width chart. Shoe widths are marked in letters with their corresponding numeral measurements. Some charts also have shoe sizes along with foot widths. Round up to the nearest measurement if your foot width falls between two numbers. Women should look at a women's shoe-width chart since the numbers differ from those in the men's chart.
