An average person has about 150 to 200 eye lashes, though some people can have as many as 500. Eyelashes grow in layers on the eyelid, and each eyelid can have three to five layers.
Eyelashes on the upper eyelid are longer and more plentiful than those on the bottom eyelid. The upper eyelid has an average of 70 to 150 lashes while the lower eyelid has and average of 60 to 80 lashes. Eyelids have an anatomy similar to human hair and work to keep foreign objects, like dust, out of the eye. Every time the eyelid blinks the eyelashes close like a curtain.
