To make a Miss America sash, sew two pieces of satin together, add a ribbon border and apply heat-transfer letters. This 2-hour project requires two 36-inch lengths of 6-inch satin fabric, ribbon, straight pins, iron-on letters, double-sided fabric tape, sewing shears, a sewing machine, straight pins, an iron and an ironing board.
- Join the satin pieces
Lay the satin pieces end-to-end on your work surface with the back sides facing up. Pin them together to form one long strip, sew the strips together and remove the pins. This is the body of the sash.
- Attach the ribbon
Lay the sash face down on your work surface, and place a 72-inch piece of ribbon along one side of it. Overlap the ribbon and the satin so that half of the ribbon rests on the satin. Join the ribbon and the satin with double-sided fabric tape.
- Fold the sash in half
Fold the sash in half lengthwise, and sew the edges together.
- Attach the letters
Place the sash on an ironing board. Arrange the iron-on letters on the front half of the sash, and iron them in place according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Join the ends of the sash
Lay the sash on your work surface facing up. Fold the bottom half up over the top half, and pin the ends together. Sew the ends in place, remove the pins and turn the sash right side out.
