The amount of each ingredient you use is based on how much lip balm you intend to make, but an easy formula is to use 1 part beeswax, 2 parts body butter, 2 parts coconut oil and about 20 drops of essential oil. Recommended body butters include mango, shea and cocoa. Make sure you use natural butters from a reputable source.

Put everything except the essential oil into a glass jar, and put that jar in a pan with an inch or so of water in it. Heat it over medium heat until all the ingredients are melted. Turn off the heat, and add the essential oil of your choice, then stir. If you prefer tinted lip balm, you can try adding a drop of natural red food coloring. It begins to harden quickly as it cools, so immediately fill the desired containers. A glass dropper is good for this. Tube containers may need to be topped off again as they cool because the mixture tends to harden. If stored in a cool, dry location, this mixture can last up to a year.
