To make a French braid, a small section of hair from the center of the top of the head is taken and separated into three strands. The right strand crosses over the middle section and then the left section over the middle section, much like a basic rope braid sequence.
The strands are kept separated while a small section from the right side of the head is added to the right strand before the strand crosses over the middle again. The middle strand is now on the right side of the head. Repeat this on the left side, adding a small section to the left strand then crossing that strand over the middle strand. Now the middle strand is on the left side. This is repeated once on each side until all the hair has been gathered into the braid.
It is important to keep the strands tightly woven so that the gathered hair does not fall out of the braid. Once all the hair has been gathered, the rest of the hair is braided into a standard rope braid. At the end of the braid, a hair tie is wrapped around the hair to secure it. Hairspray can be used to smooth down fly-away hairs and bobby pins can secure any loose sections of the braid.
