Make cologne or perfume by mixing essential oils with a base oil, water and alcohol. The fragrance takes only a few minutes to mix and up to six weeks to cure. You need a base oil, ethanol, water, a coffee filter, a dark glass bottle, a cologne bottle and essential oils.
- Choose your essential oils
Choose four different essential oils for the cologne. You need base note, middle note, top note and bridge note oils. For instance, base note oils include cedarwood, sandalwood, vanilla and cinnamon. Middle note oils include geraniums, nutmeg, clove and lemongrass. Top note oils include jasmine, rose, lemon and lavender. Bridge note oils include vanilla and lavender.
- Add the base oil
Place 1/2 ounce of either jojoba oil or sweet almond oil in a glass bottle to serve as a base oil.
- Add the essential oils
Add the essential oils to the bottle, starting with seven drops of the base note oil. Continue with seven drops of the middle note oil and six or seven drops of the top note oil. Finish by adding a drop or two of the bridge note oils.
- Add the ethanol
Add 2 1/2 ounces of ethanol to the glass bottle.
- Mix the substances
Mix the oils and alcohol by shaking the bottle for a few minutes.
- Allow the mixture to sit
Allow the mixture to sit between two days and six weeks. The longer it sits, the stronger the scent becomes.
- Add water
Add 2 tablespoons of either spring or distilled water to the bottle, and shake the mixture again.
- Filter the cologne
Pour the entire contents of the glass bottle through a filter.
- Bottle the cologne
Place some of the cologne in a cologne bottle, and store the rest in a dark glass bottle in a dark place.
