Maintain the color of red hair by shampooing it less frequently, using color-safe products, avoiding sun exposure, applying a glaze on top of the color and conditioning the hair regularly. Red hair color is the most difficult of all color shades to maintain.
Red hair should be shampooed with a sulfate-free shampoo designed for colored hair. Avoid pigmented shampoos designed to add color to the hair as these products may alter the tone of the hair. Choose conditioners designed to protect colored hair as well. Red hair should be not be shampooed daily as this causes color to bleed or fade quickly. Those with oily scalps should invest in a quality dry shampoo. If the hair has been dyed red, wait at least two days before washing it, and at least a week before immersing it in the harsh, chlorine-filled waters of a pool.
Those with red hair should avoid excess sun exposure, as red hair is UV-sensitive and can fade when constantly exposed to sunlight. Apply a UV protection spray onto the hair, or wear a hat, before going outdoors. Apply a clear color glaze to the hair at least once a month. This may be done at home or in the salon. Hair should also be deep conditioned on a weekly basis.
