Many skin care products, including lotion, have a recommended number of months that it can be safely used for. Look on the back of the container for a symbol that looks like an open container with a number by it such as 12, 24, or 36.
This number is the number of months the product is good for once it is opened. When a lotion container does not have a recommended number of months to safely use it is best to simply use good judgment. A lotion that is separating or that appears abnormal should be tossed. An unopened bottle of lotion is generally good for at least 3 to 5 years.
