Long toenails can be dangerous, according to podiatrists. The Los Angeles Times explains that any impact can lift the entire toenail off the toe. This can leave the area exposed and lead to an infection if it is not treated properly.
In the Los Angeles Times, a podiatrist states that toenails are useless but can cause problems. If a toenail is cut too short, or in the wrong way, it can develop into an ingrown toenail. This is when the toenail grows into the skin, causing extreme discomfort and sometimes severe pain. If the problem persists and turns chronic, it can require a visit to the podiatrist and the removal of that part of the toenail, including the root, that grows into the skin. This procedure can be performed in the office, and the patient can wear shoes the next day without trouble.
