To lighten dark lips, exfoliate them a few times per week, and moisturize your lips several times per day. Apply sun protection to your lips when outside, and speak to a dermatologist if your lip pigment doesn't fade.
- Exfoliate your lips
Combine honey, granulated sugar and olive oil to make a natural exfoliating paste. Dip your toothbrush into the mixture, and use it to gently rub your lips in a circular motion. Continue rubbing the toothbrush for several minutes, and then rinse off the exfoliating scrub. If you don't have the ingredients, rub a dry toothbrush against your lips instead.
- Moisturize your lips
Apply lip balm to hold in moisture and keep your lips soft. Choose lip balm that contains shea butter, and use the balm several times per day. Avoid licking your lips, as the resulting dryness makes the lips appear darker.
- Use sun protection
Damage from the sun darkens lips. Before going outside, apply a lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher to your lips. Apply the lip balm six times per day to keep your lips protected from sun exposure. If your lips still don't lighten, consult a dermatologist about options such as laser treatment.
