Chemicals damage hair, making it unhealthy. Chlorine in pools, harsh soaps, lye and alcohol in hair products can cause hair to break, dry out or fall out. Avoid getting these things in your hair, and wash them out as soon as possible if contact does occur.
Hot water and heat styling can make hair look unhealthy. Rinse with cool water in the shower, and limit heat styling. Opt for the "cool" feature when drying hair. Heat in any form can dry out hair, leaving it dull and flat.
A diet filled with protein, vitamins and healthy fats make hair look better. Sweet potatoes, salmon, walnuts, eggs, dairy, leafy greens and blueberries help hair to shine, grow strong and stop breakage. Look for ways to incorporate these foods into an eating plan.
Too much pulling on hair can cause breakage or hair loss. Opt for looser styles instead. Tension from braids, ponytails and other styles results in damage to the scalp and hair shaft. Try loose buns or sweeping hair back with a headband instead.
Prevent dry hair by moisturizing from within. Drink plenty of water to help keep hair healthy and shiny. Also, keep hair strands moisturized with hair serums, leave-in treatments and silicone products.
