Most human hair weave comes from India, China and Eastern Europe. Women in these areas sell their hair to agents that tour towns and villages in rural areas looking for women who are willing to sell their hair.
The international hair trade has resulted in a number of controversies involving coercing or forcing women and children to sell their hair. In response, some ethical hair extension companies have opened up that only deal in locally sourced hair that was acquired for a fair price or hair that was donated at Indian temples. However, the majority of human hair is still purchased by importers in India and China.
