According to Lipstick History, while lipstick has been around for centuries, lip gloss was invented by Max Factor in 1930. This cosmetic was originally created for actresses who worked in black and white films to bring more attention to the lips.
"X-Rated" was the first lip gloss Max Factor released to the public. This was in 1932, a couple of years after women saw lip gloss worn by actresses and wanted to emulate them. While many women prefer lip glosses in subtle shades that add a little color to the lips and make the pout more attractive, lip gloss can also be for men. Clear varieties of the gloss served as the first method for men to shield their lips from extreme cold, dry or hot conditions.
In the 1970s, lip gloss was revamped when Bonne Bell introduced Lip Smackers to the public. Lip Smackers is a series of flavored glosses that are particularly popular with teen and "tween" girls. These glosses have a variety of fruit flavors, and many of the glosses are also formulated to taste like famous soft drinks.
Lip gloss can be worn alone or over lipstick to give lips exquisite shine and make them healthier and softer.
