H&M stands for Hennes & Mauritz AB, a Swedish retailer of clothing for children, teens, men and women. H&M, which opened its first store in 1947, is one of the world's largest clothing retailers.
H&M was founded by Erling Persson in 1947. Initially, the brand sold only women's clothing. This changed in 1986 with the introduction of menswear retailer Mauritz Widforss to the company, when stores began selling menswear and the brand name changed to Hennes & Mauritz. H&M opened its first store outside of Sweden in London in 1976, and its first store in the United States in New York in 2000.
