According to celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan as of March 2014, there are seven short hairstyles that currently appeal to women. These are the Shaggy Pixie, the Asymmetrical Pixie, the Classic Gamine, the Boyish Crop, the Uneven Bob, the Choppy Bob and the Asymmetrical Chop Bob.
The Shaggy Pixie is similar to a Pixie cut, but features longer pieces in the front and varied lengths throughout, such as the kind sported by Jennifer Lawrence. The Asymmetrical Pixie, which is associated with Miley Cyrus, is characterized by one side of the head featuring much shorter hair than the other, whereas the back of the head is similar to a Classic Pixie cut. The Classic Gamine is similar to the Classic Pixie but longer, and is associated with Michelle Wiliiams.
The Boyish Crop, such the kind worn by Pamela Anderson, is an extremely short Pixie cut of uniform length. The Uneven Bob is a chin-length cut with one side slightly longer than the other, as popularized by Toni Garrn. The Choppy Bob, a chin-to-shoulder bob with choppy, textured ends, is another short style popular among women. It is associated with Arizona Muse. Finally, the Asymmetrical Chop Bob, popularized by Jennifer Aniston, features very choppy ends, short locks in the back and long locks in the front.
In an Allure article, McMillan suggests that women provide pictures of haircuts to better guide their stylists and to ask stylists to cut each style in stages, in case they're nervous about getting a short cut. McMillan also suggests that women avoid non-blunt ends on a Bob cut.
