Honey, yogurt, sugar, oatmeal, lemon juice, sea salt and ground fruit seeds or nuts are natural exfoliants that can be used at home. Likewise, add a teaspoon of baking soda to a daily cleanser to activate baking soda's natural exfoliating qualities.
Raw, unprocessed honey has antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal qualities. These properties help fight acne and reduce skin infections. A natural exfoliant, raw honey should be applied to the skin, left for 10 minutes and rinsed off.
Yogurt's lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, making it a natural exfoliant. Let the yogurt sit on the skin for 20 minutes before rinsing off. Lemon juice also contains alpha hydroxy acid. Make a tonic of lemon juice, apple juice and grape juice with cane sugar dissolved inside. Apply to the face, and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing off.
Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties and works well when mixed with honey and yogurt. Make a paste out of raw honey, plain yogurt and finely-ground oatmeal. Apply this to the face, leave on for 15 minutes and rinse well.
Sugar, salt and ground-up seeds or nuts are also useful as exfoliants. Any one of them works well mixed with enough botanical oil to make a paste; olive, grapeseed and sweet almond are good oils to try. Massage the paste gently into the face using a circular motion, and rinse well with cool water.
