Washing hair with a shampoo that is formulated to control the production of sebum is an effective treatment for oily hair, according to WebMD. Sebum is a natural oil produced by the sebaceous glands on the scalp. Overproduction of sebum results in oily scalp and hair.
Many experts caution against shampooing hair too frequently, as it rids the scalp of natural oils and will cause overproduction of sebum. The best shampoos for oily hair are those that remove oil but also lightly condition the hair, says dermatologist Dr. Erin Gilbert. Dr. Gilbert recommends using shampoos containing at least 3 percent salicylic acid, which reduces oil on the scalp. Applying conditioner only to the ends of the hair and avoiding the scalp also helps to keep the hair from becoming overly greasy.
