Make homemade coconut soap using a few simple ingredients, including 33 ounces of coconut oil, 4.83 ounces of lye, 12.54 ounces of water and 0.5 to 1 ounce of an essential oil, the latter being optional. Be sure to wear protective gloves when making the soap.
To make soap with this recipe at home, start by measuring and weighing all ingredients and set the temperature of a slow cooker to low. Add the water to a bowl, and slowly pour the lye into the water and mix gently. Place coconut oil into the slow cooker. After the coconut oil has melted, add the lye mixture in slowly and gently stir. Use a stick blender to combine all ingredients together until it thickens and the consistency is that of a light pudding.
Cover and continue to cook on a low setting for 45 minutes to an hour. To test if the product is done, dip a pH test strip into the mixture. It should show a number between seven and 10. Add any essential oil after the mixture has cooled, if desired.
Spoon the soap into a mold and continue to let it cool or refrigerate. After cooling, remove from molds and place on a rack or tray to harden for a few days.
