To dye your hair with household products, prepare the hair, select the correct ingredients, mix the homemade dye, apply the color, process it and rinse. Dying you hair with household products takes 45 to 90 minutes and requires deep conditioner, herbs or other botanicals, gloves, a shower cap and a color bottle.
- Prepare the hair
Let any old chemical processes grow out as they can affect the household hair dye. Wash and deep condition the hair, allowing the conditioner to stay in the hair for 30 minutes. Rinse and dry the hair completely.
- Select the color formula
Turning light brown hair blonde requires chamomile and lemon juice. Covering gray hair takes sage and rosemary. Beet and carrot juice or rosehips add red tones, while black tea or walnut shells create deep brunette tones.
- Mix the color in the bottle
For blonde, mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 2 cups of strong chamomile tea. For red hair, mix one part beet juice with one part carrot juice. For all other formulas, make a strong tea out of the ingredients. Add a few drops of apple cider vinegar to the black tea to make the color stay.
- Apply the color
Shake the color bottle well, and put on protective gloves. Apply the mixture evenly over the hair. Cover with a shower cap.
- Process and rinse
Process for 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the desired vibrancy of the end result. Rinse with cool water until the water runs clear.
