How Do You Dye Black Hair a Lighter Color?

Dyeing your hair at home is an affordable and convenient way to experiment with new looks. Use this method to dye black hair a lighter color and add flattering highlights. The required supplies are a mirror, hair dye, a shower, hair conditioner, a towel and a highlighting kit. This process takes about 12 hours, including the overnight skin allergy test.

  1. Pick the new color

For the easiest coloring experience and best results, select a color that is no more than two shades lighter than your current shade. More drastic color changes involve harsh bleaches and other chemicals that may damage your hair.

  2. Perform an allergy test

Mix a tiny amount of dye and dab it on the inside of your elbow. Leave it on overnight, and examine your skin in the morning. Do not use the dye on your hair if the test site is painful, irritated or inflamed.

  3. Mix and apply the dye

Mix and apply the dye according to the directions on the package. Leave the dye on your hair for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer.

  4. Rinse and condition your hair

Rinse your hair until the water runs clear. Apply a nourishing conditioner, leave it on your hair for 5 minutes and rinse again.

  5. Dry your hair

Wring excess water from your hair and let it dry naturally. If you use a blow dryer, select the lowest temperature setting.

  6. Select a highlight shade

Select a highlight shade with the same base color after inspecting your new color. For example, if your hair is a warm brown shade with red undertones, pick a highlight color that also has red undertones.

  7. Highlight your hair

Apply the highlights according to the package directions. Rinse and condition your hair to finish.
