To lighten your hair from black to light brown, apply a shampoo cap to all the hair, process it, rinse and condition the hair, and tone the underlying red tones. It is impossible to lift more than four levels of color with hair dye alone, so black hair must be pre-lightened. Mix equal amounts of hair bleach and shampoo in a color bottle. Shake well.
Wet the hair until damp. Put on protective gloves, and apply the soap cap to all of the hair. Work the soap cap through until the hair is evenly saturated.
Leave the soap cap on for 20 minutes or longer. Starting at the 15-minute mark, check a strand of hair periodically for the desired level of lightness.
Apply water to the soap cap to activate the shampoo. Lather, and rinse out the soap cap completely. Condition the hair. Towel dry.
If the hair is reddish, mix a green-based shampoo. If the hair has orange tones, mix a blue-based shampoo. Mix 1 tablespoon of shampoo with a pea-sized amount of the target color of food coloring.
Apply the toning shampoo evenly to damp hair. Process for 10 minutes, and rinse out until the water runs clear.
To even out the color of the hair, apply the desired shade of light-brown hair dye, processing according to the manufacturer's directions.
