For much of the '80s, girls dressed like their favorite pop stars, such as Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. They wore short skirts and neon colors, and outfits were heavily accessorized with hoop earrings, bangles and lots of makeup. Cool outfits weren't finished without "big" hair.
Another popular trend in the '80s involved dressing like tennis players. Square shapes were the "in" thing for clothing, and girls wore lots of velvet. Tops, jackets and sweaters generally had their own shoulder pads sewn right in. Girls wore fanny packs to keep their necessities close at hand, and nearly every girl owned at least one pair of Jordache or Gloria Vanderbilt jeans. Spandex was all the rage, especially spandex hot pants.
