Adi Dassler, the founder of adidas, started making sporting shoes in his mother's kitchen in Germany in the early 1900s, created a shoe factory in 1924 and sponsored Olympic-winning sprinters in 1928 and 1936. In 1949, Dassler created the first official adidas shoe with three stripes.
The German soccer team wore adidas shoes in the 1945 World Cup final, and their victory made adidas famous for cleats. Expanding their lineup from footwear, adidas became well-known for tracksuits and other sports apparel in 1967. At the 1970 FIFA World Cup, adidas released the TELSTAR soccer ball and became the official provider of soccer balls for FIFA. In 1972, adidas expanded into other sports, such as gymnastics and mountain climbing. In 1986, adidas shoes became a fashion trend when Run-D.M.C. artists began promoting them. Today, adidas continues developing new footwear and apparel for both sports and street clothing.
