How Do You Cut Split Ends?

To trim split ends, wash and condition the hair, dry it, comb it, hold a small section in one hand, run the thumb and forefinger of your other hand from the tip to the roots, and trim the split ends. This 45-minute procedure requires shampoo, conditioner, a shower, a towel, a comb, scissors, a hair clip and a headband.

  1. Prepare the hair

Shampoo, condition, and dry the hair. Do not put any styling products in it.

  2. Comb the hair

Comb the dry hair with a fine-tooth styling comb. Separate a 1-inch section of hair along the hairline. If the hair is long, keep the rest of it out of the way with a headband or hair clip.

  3. Snip the split ends

Twist the 1-inch section of hair, and hold it with one hand. Gently pinch the end of the twist between the thumb and forefinger of your other hand, and run those fingers along the hair from the tips to the roots. This makes the split ends pop out. Snip them with scissors, cutting right above each split. Release the twisted section, and repeat this process over the entire head.

  4. Comb and inspect the hair

Comb the hair, inspect it, and style it as usual.
