The Curly Girl method for curly hair involves using products and techniques that keep hair healthy, soft and tangle-free. Hair should be washed with sulfate-free products and styled with silicon-free gels; silicone products can cause build-up that is only removed with harsh products containing sulfates.
- Choose a sulfate-free shampoo for cleansing
Keep tangles at a minimum by washing hair in the shower with a sulfate-free shampoo. If your hair is long or very curly or kinky, separate hair into four sections. Start with a part in the middle of your head from your forehead to the nape of your neck. Then make another part from one ear to the other ear. Either loosely braid or use hair clips to keep sections in place.
- Apply cleanser to each section
Work cleanser into each section with your fingers. Massage your scalp with the pads of your fingers. Avoid using your fingernails to keep from damaging your hair and scalp. Secure each section after cleaning to avoid tangles.
- Rinse cleanser from each section
Start rinsing cleanser out of the top sections, one at a time. Then rinse the bottom sections, one at a time. Again, secure each section after rinsing to avoid tangles.
- Apply conditioner to each section
Apply enough conditioner to each section to coat each strand. Secure each section, applying conditioner. Leave conditioner on for about five to 10 minutes, then rinse.
- Towel dry and apply leave-in conditioner
Use a microfiber towel to dry each section. Apply leave-in conditioner, and then either air dry or use a diffuser. If you want more control over your curls, use twists, braids and hair clips to control your curl pattern while your hair dries.
