Dry scalp can be treated by consistently applying treatments that hydrate or medicate the scalp. Shampoos that are formulated to treat dry scalp, apple cider vinegar and coconut oil can be used to treat the problem. The grooming routine should be continued permanently to help prevent and treat the condition.
- Use shampoo for dry scalp
Wash the hair with a shampoo that is specifically formulated to treat dry scalp. Most dry scalp shampoos contain active ingredients, such as pyrithione zinc, that reduce the symptoms of the condition.
- Apply apple cider vinegar to the scalp
Mix 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture directly onto the scalp, and allow it to remain for 15 minutes before rinsing. This treatment can be used twice weekly to relieve itching and restore the pH balance of the scalp.
- Moisturize the scalp
Massage 3 ounces of coconut oil into the scalp and hair. Allow the oil to remain on the scalp for at least 5 minutes, and then wash with warm water and a non-drying shampoo. The oil can also be left on the hair overnight by wrapping the hair in a towel or wearing a shower cap.
