The first step in creating a smoky eye is to prepare the lid with an eye shadow base or primer. This keeps the lids oil-free and prevents the shadow from melting or slipping.
Once the primer is dry, apply eyeliner. For a traditional dark smoky eye, apply black, gray or brown to the upper lash line. Purple, blue or green eyeliner are also good colors to enhance the look. Use an eyeliner pencil to line the lower lashes, and gently smudge it with your finger.
The next step is to apply eye shadow. Sweep a light shimmer color from the brow bone to the eyelid. Get a darker shadow, and blend it up from the lash line. Blend until you can no longer see the eyeliner clearly. This color should stop at the crease.
Look over both eyes to make sure they are even. Clean up or blend further with a cotton swab if necessary.
Finally, apply several coats of mascara to make lashes look thick and dark. Curl them with an eyelash curler first, if necessary.
Remember to apply a nude lipstick or lip gloss to keep the focus on your eyes. This also prevents the makeup from overpowering your face.
