According to beauty experts Julyne Derrick at About.com and Carly Cardellino of Cosmopolitan, homemade beauty recipes begin with ingredients found in the home, including: olive oil, paraffin wax, beeswax, almond oil, honey and lemon juice. Cardellino explains that olive oil works in a number of beauty treatments, such as deep conditioner and eye-makeup remover. Derrick adds that oils, such as sweet almond and coconut oils, provide the basis for moisturizers
Derrick explains that some oils work for all skin types; but she also warns that individuals must make sure they have no allergies or other problems with ingredients used in homemade beauty products. According to Good Housekeeping, beauty experts use recipes, that include combinations of ground almonds, clear honey, walnut or sunflower oil and lemon juice to create hand exfoliants.
Cardellino explains that brown-sugar scrubs provide a cheap and easy way to exfoliate the skin; and, exfoliation helps slough away dead skin cells from the neck down and leave the body with a glow. Skinned peaches, nectarines, lecithin powder, yogurt and honey create a peach and honey mask for the skin. A cut-up apple with the seeds removed, witch hazel and water provide an apple-pectin toner for all skin types.
