Getting a cosmetology license in Florida requires a minimum of 1200 hours of education in a cosmetology program from a licensed Florida cosmetology school. Additionally, the application requires a four-hour HIV and AIDs educational course and proof of graduation from the cosmetology program. Individuals must provide a Social Security number to apply for the initial exam for the Florida cosmetology license. As of 2015, the initial exam fee is $68 to become a fully licensed Florida cosmetologist.

Apply for the exam online at MyFloridalicense.com, or print out an application to send to the Florida Board of Cosmetology. Experience is not a factor in determining education. If you are transferring from another state where you hold a current and active license, then you may take the Florida exam by endorsement granted you have met the required 1200 educational hours from a similar program. You can also bypass this requirement if you have only 1000 hours and hold a current and active license for at least one year.
