The Hope Diamond has a natural deep grayish-blue color that looks mostly blue to the naked eye. The stone is known as the "French Blue" or the "Blue Diamond of the Crown."
The Hope Diamond is a large 45.52-carat diamond that originates in India, and it was brought to Europe by French merchants. The stone belonged to King Louis XIV of France, who had it set in a gold neck ribbon he wore at ceremonial occasions. It has had several private owners throughout the history, with the last one being American socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean, who eventually sold it to diamond merchant Harry Winston. Winston donated the stone to the Smithsonian Institution. The Hope Diamond is now part of the Natural Gem Collection at the Smithsonian.
