Sears Holding Corporation states that the idea of Kmart emerged in 1899 when Sebastian S. Kresge founded the S.S. Kresge Company. The first Kmart discount department opened in 1962 in a suburb of Detroit, and 17 more stores opened the same year. By 1981, Kmart had opened more than 2,000 stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
In 2002, Kmart filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Since then, Kmart has emerged as a vital company that has been able to reduce debt, increase organization and lower operating costs. It is committed to providing customers with promotional values, great private brands and excellent service.
