To clean pearls, dissolve soap flakes in warm water, wet a soft cloth in the solution, and wipe the pearls clean. Wet a fresh cloth with plain warm water, and use it to rinse the pearls. Let the pearls air dry, and wrap them in a soft cloth before storing.
- Make a cleaning solution
Mix a teaspoon of soap flakes or a drop of gentle liquid dish detergent into a basin of warm water. Do not use harsh cleaners, ammonia or heavy-duty detergents because they remove the deep oils that give pearls their sheen.
- Wash the pearls with the soapy water
Dip a soft cloth in the basin, and gently rub the pearls to remove dirt and surface oils. Do not use an abrasive cloth, and avoid immersing the pearls in the soap solution.
- Rinse the pearls
Wet a fresh cloth with warm water. Rub the pearls gently to remove any soap or detergent residue.
- Air dry the pearls
Let the pearls rest on a soft, flat surface until they are completely dry.
- Wrap and store the pearls
Wrap the pearls in a soft cloth or a piece of tissue paper before storing in a drawer or jewelry box. Do not allow the pearls to directly touch other jewelry, as pearls are easily scratched.
