Cracked fingers and dry hands can be caused by a number of reasons including environmental factors such as cold weather, frequent hand washing and exposure to chemicals that dry the skin. Since exposure of the hands and fingers to some of these causes are unavoidable, steps can be taken to help prevent the hands from drying up and the fingers from getting cracked due to dryness.
The following are some of the ways of preventing hand dryness and cracked fingers.
- Use Protection for the Hands - When work exposes the hands to chemicals and irritants that dry up the hands, make sure to use gloves that are made of rubber or latex before handling the chemicals.
- Do Not Skimp on Washing - Although water may strip some of the moisture from the hands, washing is also an important hygienic practice that helps prevents contracting colds, flu or any other contagious medical conditions. Wash gently using warm water, steering clear of either hot or cold water. If the top of the fingers are very dry, just scrub the palms.
- Avoid Harsh Cleansers - Soaps and cleansers have harsh ingredients, particularly types that are deodorizers, anti-bacterial, foaming or have strong fragrances containing ingredients that can dry up the skin. Opt for gentle cleansers that help moisturize the skin.
- Use Moisturizers - Make moisturizing the hands a regular habit, especially every after washing the hands. Choose moisturizers that contain ingredients such as petroleum jelly, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid and urea, and glycerin.
