Cleanse curly hair with a mild shampoo when needed to remove styling product buildup and environmental pollutants. Use a conditioner to moisturize curls, and apply a styling serum to protect the hair from heat and humidity.
Curly hair is drier and more affected by humidity than straight hair, and it is prone to breakage and frizz when brushed. To cleanse curly hair, less is more. Daily shampooing can dry out curly hair and is unnecessary. Use a mild shampoo every few days to rid the hair of pollutants picked up in the air and styling product residue. Apply shampoo to the roots of the hair and the scalp, then gently shampoo to the ends of the hair. After rinsing, apply a conditioner to the lengths of the hair, avoiding the scalp. Leave the conditioner on the hair for several minutes prior to rinsing.
Gently towel dry curly hair, and avoid rubbing the hair in the towel, because the rubbing action increases frizziness. Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle the curls. Apply a gloss or shine serum to the curls after combing to smooth curls prior to styling. It is acceptable to blow dry curly hair with a diffuser attachment, but air drying the hair is recommended.
