The American Academy of Dermatology points out that scalp psoriasis causes an extreme dry scalp, as well as itching, bleeding and hair loss. Doctors treat scalp psoriasis differently than they do dandruff. Dermatologists suggest treating the psoriasis first, and using a salicylic acid shampoo treatment to soften the scales on the scalp as a secondary treatment.
For dandruff symptoms, the Mayo Clinic says to use a dandruff shampoo every day or every other day, depending on the severity of the dry scalp symptoms and the potency of the shampoo brand. After the dandruff is controlled, use the shampoo twice a week. Massage the shampoo into the scalp thoroughly, then leave it on the scalp for at least five minutes.
Stop the shampoo treatment if the scalp remains dry after several weeks of daily use, states the Mayo Clinic. Contact a doctor or dermatologist to get a more effective treatment plan. When a shampoo works for several weeks, but becomes ineffective after months of use, switch to another brand of shampoo.Learn more about Chemical Hair Treatments
