To trim your hair at home, prepare the hair, trim the sides, pull the back forward, cut the back, remove split ends, and trim the bangs. Trimming your own hair takes roughly 30 minutes and requires hair cutting shears, a wide-tooth comb and a fine-tooth comb.
- Prepare the hair
Clean, dry hair is the easiest to cut. Wash and condition the hair as usual. Dry your hair completely using a blow dryer.
- Part the hair
Use a wide-tooth comb to remove all tangles from the hair. Let the hair fall to its natural part. Use a fine-toothed comb to create a segment from the crest of the ear to the part on either side.
- Cut the sides
Twist one side of the hair in front of your shoulder, and hold it securely. Trim the ends straight across. Repeat this process on the other side. Untwist both sides, and check the hair in the mirror to see if it is even.
- Pull the back forward
If your hair is very thick, part it across at the widest part of your head. Clip the top section up. Part your hair in the back straight down the middle. Pull those sections over your shoulders.
- Trim the back
Match the back section with the side that you've already cut. Trim each back section straight across so that it lines up with the side segment. If you split the hair, repeat this procedure with the top section from the back.
- Remove split ends
Do not attempt to cut layers. Instead, separate hair into 1-inch segments. Twist each segment tightly. Lightly run your fingers up the strand. The ends that stick out are split, so gently trim those hairs away.
- Cut the bangs
Lay your pointer finger against your forehead, and comb the hair over it. Lay your middle finger on top of the hair without pulling. Drop the hand one-quarter of an inch longer than you want the bangs. Point the scissors toward the ceiling, and snip out sections at a 45-degree angle. Repeat this procedure across the width of the bangs.
