According to the American Pregnancy Association, getting a tattoo while pregnant is not advised. If any disease, such as hepatitis B or C, is contracted from an improperly sterilized tattoo apparatus, the disease can be passed along to the unborn baby. Also, the effects of inks on a fetus are unknown.
Getting a tattoo on the lower back during pregnancy may prevent a doctor from administering an epidural during delivery if the tattoo is not fully healed. In addition to the safety concerns of getting a tattoo while pregnant, doing so also is not advised because of how the body changes during pregnancy. Skin changes and weight fluctuations are common during pregnancy and after delivery and can drastically alter a tattoo's appearance.
